This paper intends to introduce an original infrastructure based on a multi-agents systems approach for automating the generalisation of the road network , a key issue for an efficient map. This paper takes place in the context of the European research project AGENT (ESPRIT 24939). It highlights the need for a multi-level analysis. It demonstrates how the multi-agent based infrastructure used meets the requirements of road network generalisation and illustrates with results the relevance of this approach.
