Research action on Analysis of geographical space and its dynamics


This research theme concerns proposing space-time models enabling a) data exploration b) analysis of regional dynamics c) a detailed analysis of an area in the analysis of phenomena and their dynamics.

Geographical data are under used or misused to analyze the geographic space and the spatial phenomena. It is due to multiple causes, from model complexity to ignorance of tools developped in diverse domains. Yet, these types of data help to better consider the geographic space.


The objective is to improve the role of geographic data as spatial problem solver and in return to identify which improvements IGN could undertake to data such as relevant levels of details for spatio-temporal data. Relevant spatio-temporal models (as models of animal movements or disease propagation). Simulation models in using 2D, 2D5, 3D data. Reconstructing imperfect data to study the dynamics of the territory (using historic data) or of phenomenon dependant on the territory (mobility data). Exploration tools to understand these data.

Research axis

  • A better modeling and analysis of geographic information : we try to propose models adapted to the targeted applications, in particular for the 3D geographic data, field data and network data. It deals with helping users to improve data modeling to facilitate their analyses. It could concern network analysis, urbain phenomenon, 3D data (DTM, big data, etc.). We work especially on the construction of spatio-temporal data from historic data or mobility data, their modeling, their analysis, their visualisation and the evaluation of their quality (they are heterogeneous).
  • A simulation of territorial evolutions : we propose different methods of analysis :
    1. space modeling in integrating diverse data: topographic data, thematic data, samples, hypothesis or expert assessment at various dates,
    2. dynamics modeling,
    3. coupling models,
    4. conception of analysis methods and simulation methods.

Our different applications are :

  • 3D city modelling,
  • spatio-temporal analysis and modeling focused on animal movements and space evolution,
  • construction and analysis of historic data bases, in collaboration with EHESS.
